Fascinating read as always.

You mentioned announcements on the radio for these kinds of "shows." Weren't there also broadcasts of concerts on radio, too? I know YouTube has a few ones of like, Lou Reed and whatnot. It's always mind-boggling to me that they would broadcast a show even if they were edited for time. Was that a big thing in L.A/SoCal? I'm curious how countrywide that was and when it fell out of fashion. By the time I came of age, it was more or less a rarity except for the odd NPR-affiliated station here and there or Austin City Limits.

Yes - there were SO MANY live broadcasts on KLOS and KMET (Los Angeles FM rock stations). I can't remember which one did Bruce Springsteen at the Roxy (1975 or 1976) and the DJ encouraged home tapers! It was indeed a thing in Southern California. Do you remember the King Biscuit Flower Hour? I think that was syndicated. This is one of those phenomena where things WERE better in the old days

I probably caught the last couple years of the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Totally forgot about it!

I would love to know what promoters/managers were negotiating for that back in the day.

I remember hearing a very hoarse Elvis Costello doing one of them. His voice was so shot he apologized for it during the broadcast but his version of Alison going into Tracks of my Tears still killed it! I'm gonna guess this would have been the mid-90's.

I think those "appearances" were part of the overall promotion plan of whatever new release - so maybe the labels were in on it too?
